Vol. 9 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - OLDER PENSIONED TEACHERS.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Education whether he has yet done anything in pursuance of his undertaking in the Dáil on July 7th, 1924, that "whatever he could do he would do in the matter" of improving the position of older pensioned teachers, and, if so, if he will state with what result.

It has recently been decided to make monthly payments, instead of quarterly payments as heretofore, to the pensioned teachers.

I am informed that further amelioration, by way of increase in the amount of the pensions, cannot be considered at present, in view of the very heavy superannuation and pensions charges entailed on the Exchequer by recent legislation.

Are we to understand that the only change that has taken place is that instead of giving 1s. in a lump sum you are giving twelve penny pieces? Is that the improvement you are suggesting for the old pensioned teachers?

No, sir; what I said was that the change made was from quarterly to monthly payments.
