Vol. 9 No. 16

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - DISTRESS IN THE WEST.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if, in view of the great shortage of fuel in the turf-burning areas and the consequent distress, he will instruct the Land Commission to have the roads passing through the Poolboy and Kellysgrove Bogs, on the estate of the Earl of Clancarty, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, repaired at once, and drainage work carried out, so that the turf heaped in these bogs may be recovered by the owners.

Mr. HOGAN:

This estate was sold by the landlord to the tenants under the Irish Land Act, 1903; the turbary was not included in the estate sold, but the tenants continued to have their existing rights as to turbary. The Land Commission cannot take any action with regard to the roads referred to at present, but the matter will be considered when they are dealing with the turbary under the recent Land Act.
