Vol. 9 No. 27

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EXPORT OF WORN-OUT HORSES.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to an advertisement in the "Drogheda Independent" of December 6th, 1924, asking for two hundred fat horses suitable for killing purposes, all blemishes overlooked, and whether he regards this as an attempt to recommence the exportation of worn-out horses to a foreign market for killing purposes, and if he is prepared to take steps to prevent such a trade.

My attention has been drawn to the advertisement referred to. While the Department of Agriculture have no power to prohibit the export of horses that are fit to undergo the sea journey, they are empowered, to prevent the shipment of horses which, owing to illness, injury, fatigue or other cause, cannot be carried without unnecessary suffering. Care will continue to be taken to ensure the strict enforcement of the Transit Orders.

I may mention that, in connection with recent exportations to Belgium, several horses were refused shipment by the Department's Portal Inspectors on the ground of unfitness for the journey. That will be continued where necessary. Further action in the matter does not at present seem called for.
