Vol. 10 No. 22

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RE-OPENING BOYNE CANAL.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has received representations from public bodies in Meath requesting his assistance in promoting the re-opening of the Boyne Canal between Navan and Drogheda, and whether he is prepared to state his intentions in the matter.

I have informed the public bodies who communicated with my Department on this matter that the possibility of my rendering assistance depended, firstly, on my being satisfied that the re-opening of the navigation, which I understand has been practically derelict for years, was a sound proposal from the economic point of view.

I pointed out that the best evidence of this would be a scheme of practical local co-operation to which the various bodies concerned would contribute, as suggested in the report of the Canal Commission, but I have not yet received any such proposition.
