Vol. 12 No. 7

COMMITTEE ON FINANCE. - VOTE 28—UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES.

I would like to take five or ten minutes for the Vote for Universities and Colleges.

Are we to understand that the President is to take charge of the Education Estimates?

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £62,800 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1926, chun Deontaisí i gCabhair do Chostaisí Fúndúireachtaí Príomh-Scoile maraon le Deontaisí fén Irish Universities Act, 1908, agus fén Acht Talmhan, 1923.

That a sum not exceeding £62,800 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1926, for Grants in Aid of the Expenses of University Institutions, including Grants under the Irish Universities Act, 1908, and the Land Act, 1923.

This particular Estimate shows no change as compared with last year. Next time it is presented there will be certain changes in it, arising out of the carrying out of the Government's decision to transfer the work and functions of the College of Science to University College, Dublin. That will involve the transferring of the staff, which is now paid direct by the Government, to the University, and the grants will have to be adjusted accordingly. But as the matters involved in this transfer have not yet been settled, we are only able to present the Estimate on the basis of that of last year.

Vote put and agreed to.
