Vol. 21 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ELPHIN ROAD GRANT.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that a grant promised to a deputation from Elphin for steam-rolling the road from Elphin to Shankill has never been allotted, and whether he is in a position to state if this money will be immediately granted and work commenced forthwith.

The statement in the first part of the question that the grant referred to has never been allotted is inaccurate. A sum of £2,137 for the improvement of the road was included in a grant of £8,765 notified to the Council on the 23rd March last. The requisite scheme for the expenditure of the grant was not received in the Department until the 5th ultimo. Approval was notified to the County Council on the 29th ultimo, and a supply of forms to requisition an advance from the grant was sent at the same time. Payment will be made on receipt of a request from the County Council and on commencement of work. The County Surveyor states that he intends to start quarrying in about a week from the present date, and that if he is able to hire road machinery the actual work of steam-rolling will commence in about a month.
