Vol. 21 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - IRISH PRODUCE IN LONDON.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he proposes to request the authorities of the Central Market, Smithfield, London, to state separately in their daily report the quantities of Irish produce received in the market.

Mr. HOGAN

The authorities of the Central Markets at Smithfield furnish a daily report, in which particulars are given of the quantities of produce marketed under the following headings:— Beef and Veal; Mutton and Lamb; Pork, etc.; Poultry and Game; Butter, Eggs, Rabbits, etc. The countries of origin are given in each case, but the quantities from Great Britain and Ireland are included together under the heading "Britain and Ireland." I am not in a position to state whether the Market authorities could show separately the quantities of each class of Irish produce received in the market, but enquiries are being made on this point. It should be borne in mind that returns of Irish produce received in this market are likely to be incomplete, seeing that Irish animals shipped alive for slaughter at British centres, and marketed at the Central Markets, cannot in every case be shown as being of Irish origin.
