Vol. 21 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BIRR CARPENTER'S COMPENSATION.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received an appeal from Mr. Peter Grennan, Main Street, Crinkle, Birr, Offaly, regarding the amount granted him for compensation for loss of employment as carpenter in the late Birr Workhouse; whether he was awarded an amount of £482 by the late Birr Board of Guardians, and if he can state the reason why the amount was reduced to £324 1s. 3d. by his Department, or if he can now agree to sanction payment of the amount originally recommended.

The answer to the first and second parts of the question is in the affirmative. The award was not reduced in the Department. The former Board of Guardians awarded the larger sum, but made no arrangements for payment, and the County Scheme did not fix any liability in the matter. The Board of Guardians went out of office on the 4th August, 1921, and a local Committee then revised the allowance, and fixed the smaller sum. The sanction of the Dáil Department of Local Government to the payment of that sum was given on the 9th February, 1922. The payment appears to have been accepted by Mr. Grennan as a full settlement. He did not appeal until September, 1924, when it was decided that as he had accepted the payment mentioned, and allowed such a period of time to elapse, the appeal could not be entertained. That decision cannot now be re-considered.
