Vol. 21 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SANITARY CONDITIONS IN BALLAGHADEREEN.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that a report made in June, 1925, by the Medical Officer of Ballaghadereen, County Roscommon, to his Department, stated (a) that a sewer in that town had got broken down in various parts, and in the immediate vicinity of the local creamery gave off a most offensive smell, due to choking and consequent lodgment of sewage, and (b) that he recommended the closing of a graveyard in the centre of the town because owing to the want of drainage newly-opened graves get flooded and also that the place is infested with rats, and whether the Minister will state what steps, if any, he proposes to take to ensure that those matters will be attended to in the interests of the public health of the locality.

The reports made by the Medical Officer of Health, Ballaghadereen, in June, 1925, as to (1) defective sewerage, and (2) insanitary burial ground came under the notice of the Department. It appears that sewerage repairs were at the time carried out by the local engineer under instructions from the late Castlerea Rural District Council. The Roscommon Board of Health considered the other matter on the 21st November, 1925, when an Order was made "Closing deferred until new cemetery is available." No reference to the subject is contained in the recent half-yearly reports of the Medical Officer, but the Local Authority will be addressed with a view to ascertaining the present position.
