Vol. 21 No. 10

ORAL ANSWERS. - MOTORISTS AND BORDER ROADS.

asked the Minister for Finance if he was aware that motorists experienced great difficulty when crossing the border in knowing which roads are approved and non-approved, and whether he would take steps to have warning signs erected on all unapproved roads.

I am not aware that motorists experience great difficulty when crossing the Land Frontier between the Saorstát and Northern Ireland through uncertainty as to whether any particular road is approved for trans-Frontier traffic. A list of the approved roads is given in the Land Frontier Regulations, 1923 and 1924, and information relative to trans-Frontier traffic on such roads can be obtained from any Officer of Customs and Excise, from local members of the Gárdaí Síochána, or from the Revenue Commissioners. Further, special provision has been made in the Road Signs and Traffic Signals Regulations, 1926, for the erection by Councils charged with the maintenance of roads crossing the Frontier of signs indicating whether traffic is permitted to cross the Frontier on such roads. Inquiries regarding the latter provision should be addressed to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health.

Does the Minister state that signs are being fixed?

There seems to be a duty on the Councils to fix such signs.

Is the Minister aware that there is a prosecution pending against a man who did not understand that it was a non-approved road?

I am not aware, and I am very sceptical as to the various excuses made by people prosecuted.
