Vol. 21 No. 11

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - KILLYBEGS PIER.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he can make any provision by way of grant, for the purpose of erecting a stone pier at Killybegs, to replace the existing wooden pier which is held to be unsafe for horse or other traffic and not suitable, in view of the increased fishing expected there next year.

I can make no promise of a State grant for the replacement of the existing pier at Killybegs by a stone or concrete structure. The existing pier is, I am informed, quite suitable for the needs of the fishing industry, but some repairs are needed to the deck to make it safe for traffic.

The pier is under the control of harbour commissioners, who are empowered to levy tolls for the maintenance of the work.

Might I ask if it would be possible for the Minister for Industry and Commerce to take this matter into consideration when he is allocating the £150,000 for the relief of distress?

That is a separate question.

I do not think that this is a matter that should be met from a Relief Grant. There was a deputation from the harbour commissioners a week or two ago making representations on the matter, and the case was rather fully gone into with them.
