Vol. 21 No. 11

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - FISHING ON THE MEALAGH RIVER.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he is aware that fishing on the Mealagh River at Donomark has been injured in recent years by reason of the fact that salmon cannot go up the river to spawn, but that if the river was cleared at this point the fish would travel up to the upper reaches to the splendid fishing pools there; if the Minister is further aware that an Inspector of the Fisheries Department inspected this river over a year ago, and whether any steps are being taken to act on his report.

The falls at Donomark are undoubtedly an obstruction to the ascent of salmon to the upper waters of the River Mealagh, and work done to facilitate their ascent has not proved permanent.

If the persons interested in the fisheries of the river are prepared to carry out further works of improvement, the Department will give them such advice and assistance as are in its power.
