Vol. 21 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INNISBOFIN CABLE.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether, in view of the danger and inconveniences in times of storm to the islanders, it is intended to have the cable to Innisbofin Island repaired.

The repair of the submarine cable connecting Innisbofin and the mainland could only be effected by a specially equipped cable ship. The Department has no such vessel, and the cost of chartering one would be very heavy.

A scheme for serving both Innisbofin and Clare Island by wireless telephony from the mainland has, however, been authorised, by the Department, which is awaiting experience of the working of a similar undertaking between Arranmore Island (Donegal) and Burtonport, which will shortly be in operation, before proceeding with the project.

In view of the answer, would the Parliamentary Secretary consider the advisability of supplying a motor-boat to carry the mails to the island of Innisbofin?

That is a separate question, I think.
