Vol. 21 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TEAGASC TRE GHAEDHILG I gCOLAISTI MUINTEOIREACHTA.

den Aire Oideachais (1) cé mhéid den teagasc atá dá dhéanamh tré Ghaedhilg insna Coláistí nua Ullmhucháin atá ar siubhal fé scáth an Rialtais; agus (2) an bhfuil aon deimhniú ag an Aire go bhféadfar leanúint den teagase tré Ghaedhilg insna Coláístí Múinteoíreachta i gceann trí mblian eile nuair a bheidh na scoláirí ó na coláistí ullmhúcháin agus na scoláir-oidí ó na meadhon-scoileanna ag dul isteach insna Coláistí Múinteoireachta.

(1) All the subjects, other than English, are being taught through the medium of Irish in the Preparatory Colleges. (2) At present, instruction in the majority of the subjects of the curriculum in the four training colleges under Catholic management is being given through the medium of Irish, and it is practically certain from this fact and from statements which have been received from the principals of these colleges that within the coming three years it will be possible to have instruction in all the subjects, other than English, given through the medium of Irish.

In the case of the students of the training college under Protestant management no instruction, other than in the language itself, is at present being given through the medium of Irish, and, having regard to existing circumstances, and to a statement received from the authorities of this college, it is not probable that the college will be in a position within the coming three years to continue the instruction of students from the preparatory colleges and secondary schools through the medium of Irish.

den Aire Oideachais (1) an bhfuil aon iarracht dá dhéanamh ag an Aire chun ollamhain do sholáthar a fhéadfaidh a gcuid teagaisc a dhéanamh tré Ghaedhilg insna Coláistí Múinteoireachta agus i gColáistí eile i Saorstát Eireann; (2) cad tá dá dhéanamh ag na hollscoileanna—go mór mór i gCorcaigh agus i nGaillimh —chun dul i gcabhair ar an Aire sa ghnó san; (3) an bhfuil aon iarracht dá dhéanamh ag Ollscoileanna an tSaorstáit chun céimeanna léighinn tré Ghaedhilg do thairiscint do na daoine atá dá lorg; agus (4) an bhfuil fhois ag an Aire a mhéid atá na hOllscoileanna ag cabhrú leis i nGaedhealúchán an oideachais sa tSaorstát.

(1) The training and provision of teachers for training colleges and secondary schools is mainly carried out by the Colleges of the Universities. Where possible, training colleges are required to appoint only professors qualified to give instruction through the medium of Irish.

(2) Two full-time assistants to the professor of education have been provided in University College, Dublin, to supervise the training in teaching through Irish of candidates for the Higher Diploma in Education; one of these assistants deals with Mathematics and scientific subjects and the other with Literature, Languages and History. About twenty of the candidates for the Higher Diploma at present in attendance at this college are being prepared to give instruction through Irish.

Instruction through the medium of Irish has been given in Cork University College in the past year to students for degrees in the faculties of Arts and Science in the following subjects (in addition to Irish): History, Geography, Mathematics and Chemistry. Provision is also made for the award of a special Irish certificate (Barántas Gaedhilge), the qualifications for which include competency to give instruction in two school subjects through the medium of Irish. Galway University College has recently appointed Lecturers to lecture through Irish, one in History and the other in Commerce. Provision is also made for giving instruction through Irish in Education, Modern Languages, Mathematics and Science. In Trinity College facilities are given for the taking of modern Irish as a subject for the honours and the pass degree.

(3). In addition to the provision of degrees in the Faculty of Celtic Studies the reply to the preceding part of the question indicates what is being done as far as the information at my disposal goes, to provide instruction through Irish leading to degrees in other Faculties.

(4). I think an answer to the last part of the question may be obtained by adding together the replies to the other parts of the question.
