Vol. 21 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DUNMANWAY SOLDIER'S FUNERAL EXPENSES.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that Mrs. Donovan, Kilbarry, Dunmanway, Co. Cork, only received a gratuity of £30 in respect of the death in action of her son, Volunteer Stephen Donovan, during the disturbances of 1922; and whether, in view of the fact that not one penny was paid in respect of this soldier's funeral expenses, which are still unpaid, he will consider making a payment to cover such expenses.

In addition to the gratuity of £30 awarded to Mrs. O'Mahony (formerly Donovan) in respect of her son, Stephen Donovan, dependant's allowance at the rate of 7/- per week was paid to her during the period from the date of her son's death, the 28th September, 1922, to the 31st March, 1924. I consider, therefore, having regard to the circumstances of the case, that the award was an equitable one.

There is no record of any application having been received from Mrs. O'Mahony (Donovan) in respect of funeral expenses incurred in this case. Two accounts, however, in respect of a shroud and the digging of a grave amounting to £2 10/- have been discharged.

If the bills in respect of any other expenses incurred in connection with the burial are submitted to me they will be given due consideration.
