Vol. 21 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BALLINAKILL DRAINAGE SCHEME.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received the resolution of protest passed by the Ballinakill Drainage District Board on the 24th October last against the proposed expenditure of £600 on the drainage system of that district; if he is aware that the works have been started without any notification having been given to the trustees, and if in view of the fact that since the constitution of this drainage district the works have been efficiently maintained and that they can now be shown to be sufficient for the needs of the district he will see that the work be stopped forthwith and no further capital expenditure incurred pending inquiry.

The resolution was duly received. The Commissioners of Public Works are not bound to send any notice to Drainage Trustees before commencing works in a district, but they usually do so as a matter of courtesy. Notice was sent in this case about the time the works began.

I am advised that the district was not efficiently maintained and that the works of restoration are necessary; it is not proposed to stop them; they will, however, be kept down to what is strictly necessary.
