Vol. 21 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TIPPERARY POSTAL FACILITIES.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he has received a petition from the residents of the Knockanroe-Aughall area of Templemore postal district asking for a daily delivery of letters, and if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

An application from the residents of the Knockanroe-Aughall area of the Templemore postal district, asking for a daily delivery of letters, is under consideration, and I shall acquaint the Deputy of the result in due course.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs to state when he proposes to revert to the daily delivery of letters in the Upperchurch, Co. Tipperary, area.

A daily delivery of letters is afforded in Upperchurch village and in the more important townlands in the vicinity. The frequency of service to the other townlands had to be reduced in 1923 to three days a week on account of the small amount of correspondence for delivery. I am having enquiry made as to whether the circumstances have in any way changed in the meantime, and will communicate the result to the Deputy later.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (1) whether he will state the number of rural post offices closed since 1920, and if he is aware that at Kilcavan (Laoighis), in the Tullamore Postal area, the post office was closed a few years ago, as a result of which the residents of that area have suffered inconvenience in not having a letter box erected there in lieu of the old arrangement; and will the Minister consider the question of having a letter box erected immediately at Kilcavan Cross in view of the fact that the postman who delivers letters in the area could collect letters there each day as he passes the Cross on his homeward journey to Geashill.

Seventy-nine rural post offices have been abolished since 1920 on account of the small amount of business transacted, I am having inquiry made as to the case for a letter box in the vicinity of the former Post Office at Kilcavan which was closed in 1923, and I shall communicate the result to the Deputy later.
