Vol. 21 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - NENAGH SANITATION.

Mr. BOLAND (for Mr. T. Sheehy) (Tipperary)

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware of the urgent need for the improvement of the water supply and extension of the sewerage system in the town of Nenagh, County Tipperary, and if he is prepared to consider the advisability of making a grant for these works out of the moneys available for the relief of unemployment.

A scheme of waterworks extension and improvement was promoted by the Nenagh Urban District Council in 1926, and application was made for a loan of £5,600. The scheme was approved and the Council notified that a loan would be advanced out of the Local Loans Fund upon the Council paying off instalments of existing loans that had been allowed to fall into arrears. Tenders were subsequently invited by the Council, and in September last it was intimated to the Department that the tenders received were considered too high by the Council, and as the year was then well advanced it was decided by the Council to defer the carrying out of the work to the Spring time of next year.

The allocation of monies that may be voted for the relief of distress will rest with the Department of Finance.
