Vol. 21 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TRAINING OF OPHTHALMIC OPTICIANS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that legislation exists in other countries, notably America and the Australian States, for the regulation of optometry, and whether, having in view the number of unqualified persons who engage in the practice of sight-testing, it is his intention to introduce legislation to secure the better training of ophthalmic opticians to regulate that practice and for all other relevant purposes.

I am aware of the existence of legislation of the nature indicated. While I am prepared to give full consideration to any representations which may be made and to consult with anyone whose views would be of assistance, any undertaking to introduce legislation could not be given until the whole subject is fully investigated.
