Vol. 21 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMMANDEERED MOTOR (LEITRIM).

asked the Minister for Defence if a two-seater motor car, I.T. 406—the property of Mr. Wilton V. Taylor, of Mohill, County Leitrim, was commandeered by soldiers in charge of an officer from Boyle at 3 p.m. on the 4th April, 1922, and handed over to a lieutenant of the National Army; whether a claim for £23 15s. for damage, consisting of a broken radiator, hood, drive shaft universal joint, and bearing of engine was furnished on the 1st May, 1922, and again on the 28th June, 1924, to the Army Claims Department, and if all liability for this damage was denied on each occasion, and if this claim will now be reconsidered and payment made to Mr. Taylor.

A claim for £22 1s. 7d. in respect of damage and expenses in connection with the commandeering of a motor car was received from Mr. Wilton V. Taylor. From the information supplied by the claimant there was no evidence to show that the car in question had been commandeered by members of the National Army. If the Deputy can supply further information, giving the name of the officer alleged to have taken the car, I will have it considered.

The name of the officer is actually in the question I put down.

I did not hear the Deputy.

Will Deputy Holt please repeat his supplementary question?

The name of the officer was in the question when I handed it in.

I have only the question as it is before me. As far as I remember the case, it was stated that the man who commandeered the car came from the Boyle Barracks which, at that time, was not in the hands of the National Army, but in the hands of armed rebels.

I actually gave the name of the officer in my question.

Well, I have not got it.

That is a very lame excuse to give.
