Vol. 21 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WESTMEATH VOTERS' LIST.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health what steps he is taking to assure a better compilation of the voters' list for the county of Westmeath for the year 1928.

Complaints have not been received either that qualified persons were not included or that unqualified persons were included in the present register for the County of Westmeath. Preparation of the new register commenced on the 15th instant. Collectors were specifically warned that neglect to discharge their duties fully would involve loss of fees and removal from office. This warning will be strictly enforced. Absolute accuracy cannot be guaranteed unless the public co-operate by inspecting the lists, which will be published on 29th January next, and ensuring that their names are accurately included in the lists and by making claims if their names are left off. Claim forms can be obtained from the Registration Officer or at the Post Office, and claims can be made up to the 26th February.

I beg to inform the Minister that there were a great many omissions from the register, particularly in the Mullingar area, and would the Minister consider it advisable to instruct the rate collectors to consult the local registers of births, deaths and marriages at the various dispensaries with a view to an accurate compilation of the register in the future?

I must ask the Deputy to believe that no complaints have reached me on the matter, and also that the instructions sent out on the 4th November this year very emphatically deal with the whole question of the accurate compilation of the register.

Will the Minister see to it that in Cork City and County partisans of the Cumann na nGaedheal Party will not be engaged in the compilation of the register?

The Deputy will have to kill his own Hessian.
