Vol. 21 No. 18

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - DE CLIFFORD ESTATE, MAYO.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that acute congestion exists in the de Clifford Estate, Mayo, which was acquired by the Congested Districts Board in 1911; that the holdings of this estate are not yet vested, and that the large grazing ranches on the estate are not yet acquired, and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Irish Land Commission to relieve the acute congestion existing, to vest the holdings valued over £10, and to acquire the ranches held by Mr. James Cowan, Knockroe and Knockadoroghy, and Mr. John McEllin, Brize and Brownhall, Balla.

As the Deputy has already been informed, the late Congested Districts Board resumed and distributed three farms on the de Clifford Estate containing 352 acres, and the Land Commission do not think it desirable to proceed further in the vesting of the unvested portion of the estate, which consists largely of small holdings, until additional lands have been acquired. The Land Commission are in negotiation with regard to the holdings of the persons referred to in the latter part of the question.
