Vol. 22 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SHANNON FLOODING (ROSCOMMON).

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that considerable damage is done to and considerable loss suffered by the farming community each year at Rooskey, County Roscommon, by the flooding of the Shannon; if an engineer has been sent to inspect the area and make a report thereon, what the recommendations of the engineer were; and whether it is the intention of the Minister to give effect to these recommendations.

Representations were made to the Commissioners of Public Works respecting the flooding of lands at Rooskey, Co. Roscommon, by the Shannon and last year they sent an experienced land valuer to the district in order to estimate the area affected by the Shannon flooding and the improvement in annual value that would accrue if a drainage scheme were carried out. His work was considerably hampered by bad weather and in addition he was required for urgent work elsewhere. His report on the lands affected by flooding in Co. Roscommon has been completed, but that dealing with Co. Leitrim is not yet available. When the complete report is received it will at once be considered, with a view to seeing whether a scheme can be formulated to reduce the flooding complained of, and on what financial terms.
