Vol. 22 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce why unemployment benefit has been refused to Nicholas Tierney, Rose Rock Terrace, Wexford.

Unemployment benefit has been refused to Nicholas Tierney, of Rose Rock Terrace, Wexford, because he has exhausted his rights to unemployment benefit. In fact he has overdrawn his account to the extent of eighteen days' benefit, which must be repaid before any further benefit becomes due to him.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say if his Department is taking any steps to prevent a recurrence of this? It happens too often. Unemployed men are not in a position to pay back money given to them in mistake by the Department.

The facts are as stated. The man cannot get further benefit until he has repaid this.

I will repeat the question. Is the Department taking any steps to prevent a recurrence of this? I think that the Parliamentary Secretary will agree that it is happening too often. Unemployed men ought not to be responsible for mistakes of the Department.

I do not think it happens very often.

Too often. Still no answer.
