Vol. 22 No. 15

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - UNEMPLOYED WOMEN.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, having regard to the fact that the Final Report of the Committee on the Relief of Unemployment contains no specific reference to female unemployment, he is in a position to say what steps the Government propose to take towards solving the problem of unemployment as it affects single women and women with dependents.

The Committee for the Relief of Unemployment was set up to consider and report as to the steps which might be taken for the immediate relief of unemployment generally within the limits set out in their terms of reference. The fact that there is no specific reference to female unemployment in their Report suggests, what is, indeed, generally recognised, that the problem of unemployment amongst female workers cannot effectively be met by immediate or temporary schemes. Certain important aspects of this matter have, however, been the subject of a consideration by the Commission on Technical Education whose Report is at present being examined.
