Vol. 22 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYED IN DUBLIN.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what amount of the Unemployed Relief Grant has been allotted to the City of Dublin; whether he is aware that the grants to Dublin are almost expended, whilst many hundreds, whose applications for relief work have not yet been dealt with, are unemployed; and if, in view of the circumstances prevailing in the city, he will take immediate steps for the making of a grant to continue the work undertaken by the City Commissioners for the relief of the unemployed.

A sum of £22,150 was allocated from the Relief Scheme Vote for expenditure on relief works in the county borough of Dublin.

Although it is expected that practically the whole of this amount will be expended by the 31st instant, the works undertaken by the City Commissioners, which consist of the development of housing sites, will not be discontinued, and it is expected will not be completed for some five or six months. Further, as the men become no longer required on the works already commenced, it is hoped that most of them will be absorbed on other works as the building season opens up in the new financial year.

Out of the total expenditure of £70,000 to £80,000 which it is estimated will be required for the works towards which a grant is being made from the Relief Schemes Vote, from £40,000 to £50,000 will probably remain unexpended on the 31st instant.

Mr. BYRNE

May I take it from that that a number of those who are awaiting their turn for this relief work will get consideration?

I should say it would appear so from the answer.
