Vol. 22 No. 19

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. WRITTEN ANSWERS. - ELIGIBILITY OF GARDAI AS LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTORS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if members of the Gárda Síochána, resident in barracks, are eligible to be registered as Local Government voters, and, if so, under what section of what Act.

The statutory conditions governing the Local Government franchise are contained in the Representation of the People Act, 1918, as amended by the Local Government Electors Registration Act, 1924. Members of the Gárda Síochána as such are not disqualified from being registered as Local Government electors so long as they fulfil the statutory conditions. The Registration Officer is the authority to determine whether or not a person is entitled to franchise, and I have no jurisdiction.
