Vol. 23 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. WRITTEN ANSWERS. - CONGESTION IN SOUTH MAYO.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the parish of The Neale, South Mayo; that several petitions on behalf of the tenants on uneconomic holdings were sent to the Irish Land Commission during the past five years requesting the resumption of the large grazing ranches held by Mellett's Estate. Neale Park; Mrs. Ellen Browne, Ballyslingadaun; Patrick Browne. Ellistraun. Ballymartin; Patrick Daly, Bunnavanrish and Carnacole West: and Michael and Mary Mellett, Coolisduff; and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken to acquire those grazing ranches for the relief of the existing congestion.

The lands of Neale Park, comprising 240 acres, were published in a provisional list of lands which, if not excluded in consequence of a valid objection, would become vested in the Land Commission on the appointed day. The owner lodged an objection to the acquisition of the lands, and after hearing in court the Land Commission gave judgment allowing the objection.

The lands of Coolisduff, comprising 290 acres, which are subject to Land Purchase Annuity, were also published in a provisional list. The question of the acquisition of these lands for bonds or by exchange is at present under consideration.

The lands of Cahernichole East and Tobernashee, comprising 120 acres, which are subject to Land Purchase Annuity, have also been published in a provisional list. The owner has lodged an objection, and the matter is at present under consideration.

As regards the other lands referred to in the question. I am making inquiries, and will send the information to the Deputy.
