Vol. 23 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SOUTH CORK OFFICIAL'S SALARY

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether the salary of the Secretary to the South Cork Board of Public Assistance has been increased; and, if so, by what amount, and on whose recommendation.

In consequence of the introduction of the joint county scheme and the transfer of services in pursuance of the Local Government Act, 1925, the question of the salary of the Secretary was in abeyance for some time. In accordance with decisions of the local authorities concerned, his total remuneration has now been fixed at £940 a year, which covers remuneration for acting as Superintendent Registrar.

Will the Minister say whether there was a sworn inquiry held into the question of this salary recently, and that a Local Government Inspector attended, and that the salary was fixed at £750 as an inclusive salary for this officer? Is the Minister aware that representations were made by the Secretary against that finding, and that he was supported in that view by another paid official, Commissioner Monahan, of Cork, and is it on the recommendations or representations of Commissioner Monahan that the extra £190 a year has been put on the ratepayers of Cork City and County?

The decision has been taken after very careful consideration by the two local authorities concerned in the matter and by the Ministry.

The two local authorities concerned agreed to a salary of £750 a year and were no party to the increase.

The Deputy will have to argue that with the local authorities.
