Vol. 23 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - JENKINSTOWN DRAINAGE SCHEME.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he can state what progress has been made with the Jenkinstown (County Kilkenny) drainage scheme; and when operations on this work are likely to be undertaken.

The Commissioners of Public Works considered their engineer's and valuer's reports on the Jenkinstown drainage proposal, and decided to investigate the possibility of a scheme for the Nore River as a whole. They arrived at this decision because piecemeal treatment of a large river is unsatisfactory, and any drainage works which they might carry out on the upper reaches of the river near Jenkinstown would cause flooding and complaints from the occupiers further down the river.

The Commissioners have sent a land valuer to the district to report on the improvement of lands which might be expected from a comprehensive scheme on the Nore River.

Might I ask when the Commissioners came to that decision? This scheme has been in hands for more than two years and now, when attention has been called to it, steps are being taken to revise the whole thing. Surely it ought to have been possible during the last two years to let the County Council know how matters stood and to expedite it.
