Vol. 23 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EMERGENCY HOLDINGS.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can state whether the Government still retain emergency holdings which were only acquired under the Defence of the Realm Act for war purposes; and, if so, whether he will state (1) the number of such holdings; (2) the exact location of each; (3) what use is being made of them; (4) what they cost the State per annum; and (5) when it is proposed to return them to their owners.

In addition to the two military holdings as to which the Minister for Defence gave information to the Deputy on 26th April, there are four other holdings acquired under the Defence of the Realm Act for war purposes which are still in the possession of the Saorstát Government. Appended are the particulars for which the Deputy asks; the answer to the fifth part of the question, is "As soon as practicable." I may add that six other holdings of the same kind have already been surrendered.

Emergency Holdings at present in the hands of the Commissioners of Public Works.

Mr. BOLAND

Amongst the holdings is there one for which the State pays £400 per annum and which is re-let to the owner for £100?

The property to which the Deputy refers was handed back to the owner on the 20th of January last. There was one year when the land was put up for public auction and the owner was the highest bidder and got the land for £100.

Mr. BOLAND

For one year.
