Vol. 23 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RIVER BARROW (FLOODING).

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that great hardship is inflicted on the people of Graigue-Cullen, Carlow, by the periodical flooding of the River Barrow; that a nine-inch board has been placed over the weir at Mr. Shackleton's mill, over which is placed a gangway supported by cement piers, the object of which was to raise the board at flooding times; that this board is never lifted when water is high, and, as a consequence, holds all rubbish; and whether, in view of these facts, the Minister will undertake to have inquiries made in the matter at an early date.

Flooding at Graigue-Cullen, Carlow, is rare; it happened in 1925 and 1926, which were years of exceptional floods, but has not happened during last winter. It appears to be due rather to the choking-up of an old drain than to the weir, though no doubt the weir has an influence upon it. The question of the alleged enhancement of the weir had already been brought to the notice of the Commissioners of Public Works, and inquiries are being made.
