Vol. 23 No. 10

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BLACKWATER SALMON.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that practically no salmon is to be seen in the upper reaches of the Blackwater, due mainly to the artificial barriers at Lismore and Clondulane; and whether he intends to introduce proposals for legislation to remove these obstructions.

I am not aware that the condition of the salmon fisheries in the river Blackwater is as stated in the question. The existing Statutes contain provisions for allowing the ascent of salmon over obstructions in rivers; but the flow of water, upon which the run of salmon depends, is controlled by meteorological conditions. There is evidence that the upper waters of the Blackwater have been adequately stocked for a number of years past.
