Vol. 23 No. 20

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SUB-POSTMASTERS.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he can state (a) the number of persons classed as sub-postmasters in the Saorstát; (b) the rates of pay attached to the position; (c) whether sub-postmasters are entitled to pensions; (d) whether any contribution is paid by the Department towards the rent and rates of the Post Office; (e) whether an allowance is made for pens, ink, and paper required in the performance of the duties of the position; and (f) whether any general conditions are laid down by the Department when making appointments of this kind.

The total number of sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses employed in the Saorstát is 2,027. Payment is made in accordance with a scale based on a system of calculation in units of the business transacted at offices.

Certain standard minima are fixed in accordance with the services performed. Payment therefore varies between £18 and £490 per annum, with an average of about £93 per office.

Sub-postmasters are not entitled to pensions.

The payment at each office covers the provision of office accommodation. The Department makes no direct contribution in respect of rents or rates.

No special allowance is made for the provision of pens, ink and blotting paper. This is covered by the annual payment.

General conditions are laid down by the Department when making appointments. I shall be glad, if the Deputy wishes, to supply him with the printed form in use for the purpose.

No charge for red tape.
