Vol. 26 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ASSURANCE COMPANIES AND BIRTH CERTIFICATION.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that many agents of Assurance Companies induce persons taking out assurance policies for small sums to understate their age; that in consequence the premiums payable are much smaller than would be the case if the correct age was given; that when the policy matures, and before payment of the sum assured, birth certificates are required by the Assurance Companies and deductions made from the sum payable; and whether he will introduce proposals for legislation making it obligatory for Assurance Companies to obtain birth certificates before concluding business with clients.

Mr. HOGAN

I am not aware that the practice mentioned by the Deputy is a prevalent one. The existing legislation regulating the conduct of industrial assurance is, however, under review for the purpose of revision, and advantage will be taken of this revision to consider the desirability of introducing a provision to deal with the matter.
