Vol. 27 No. 1

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - ACQUISITION OF MAYO LANDS.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that the estate of Lord Mayo, Ballina, Hollymount, Co. Mayo, was acquired by the Congested Districts Board over 15 years ago: that the holdings of the tenants on that estate are not yet vested, and if he will state the cause of the delay by the Irish Land Commission in vesting.

The estate of the Earl of Mayo comprised 559 acres of tenanted land, and was vested in the Congested Districts Board on 4th March, 1915. A rearrangement of the holdings was necessary before they could be resold, and as there was no untenanted land on this estate the striping was held up until such land was acquired. Untenanted lands have recently been acquired by the Land Commission, and the Mayo Estate will be dealt with in connection with them.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state the cause of delay by the Irish Land Commission in acquiring the large grazing ranch known as Coolaghbawn Farm held by Mr. Joseph Hession, Poolbawn, Hollymount, Co. Mayo, on the Bowen Estate, for the purpose of providing economic holdings for the tenants under £10 valuation in the parish of Kilcommon.

The farm referred to appears to be tenanted land in the occupation of James J. Hession as tenant on the estate of the Rev. and Hon. Wm. Edward Bowen, County Mayo, which is the subject of proceedings for sale under the Land Act, 1923. The question of the retention of this holding with a view to taking proceedings for its resumption will be considered in due course.
