Vol. 27 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - READJUSTMENT OF SLIGO HOLDINGS.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that 20 tenants on the Carey estate, Carnaclay, Westport, who have received additions of land on the Sligo estate, in Ballinlough and Slogger, live at the inconvenient distance of 3 miles from those lands; and if he will consider readjusting those additions by converting them into economic farms and transferring some of those tenants to them, thereby allowing for enlargement of remaining holdings in Carnaclay.

The Land Commission is aware that a small number of the tenants in the townlands of Carrownaclea and Drumminvonagh on the estate of Michael Carey received additional land in the townlands of Slaugar and Ballinlough on the estate of the Marquis of Sligo at a distance of between 2 and 3 miles from their holdings; the question of using the lands of Ballinlough and Slaugar for the purpose of providing holdings for migrants from the Carey estate was considered, and having regard to the quality of the lands it was decided that the needs of these tenants would be best served by allotting the lands in question as additions to their holdings.

The Land Commission is, therefore, considering the enlargement of these places or the joining of them into farms?

No. This matter has already been dealt with. It was partly dealt with by the C.D.B. and partly by the Land Commission. The land is rough grazing bog and is not suitable for settling new holders on.
