Vol. 28 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allegations Against Gárda Síochána.

asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been called to a statement made in the Central Criminal Court on 17th December, 1928, and reported in the daily Press on 18th December, 1928, in a case in which Patrick J. Glynn and Mary C. Jennings were charged with having set fire to the residence "Bloomville," Offaly, on the night of May 3rd, 1928, with intent to defraud; whether he is aware that the defendant (Glynn) in the course of examination is reported as having stated that in a conversation with him (Glynn) at the door of "Bloomville" a sergeant of the Gárda Síochána said he was going to arrest Miss Jennings' sister, and also Messrs. Davin and Gorry; whether there is any evidence in the possession of the Gárda Síochána or any grounds for suspicion that the two latter persons were in any respect implicated in the case, and whether the sergeant concerned made any statement to the accused imputing to Messrs. Davin and Gorry guilty knowledge.

As the Deputy is aware, this matter has already been the subject of correspondence between us, and as regards the sergeant I have really nothing to add to my letter of the 19th ultimo, in which I informed the Deputy that the sergeant in question denies that he used the words attributed to him by Mr. Glynn. There is, of course, no foundation for any suggestion by anybody that either Deputy Davin or Deputy Gorry was in any way implicated in the criminal charges.
