Vol. 28 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Service to Sherkin Island.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the proposed curtailment of the postal service to Sherkin Island, Baltimore, Co. Cork; whether he has taken into consideration that by this proposed cutting great hardship will be caused to the islanders, as the boat which transports the mails is the only means of communication which they possess with the mainland, and that accordingly the islanders will be marooned and unable to obtain medical attendance when required, or to make their livelihood; and whether he will see that the existing service is retained in view of the very small expense involved, the islanders being willing to call for their letters.

The Deputy's information is incorrect in this case. It is not intended to curtail the daily boat service to Sherkin Island. The only alteration proposed, so far as Sherkin Island is concerned, is that delivery of correspondence to the residents will only be made on three days a week. On the remaining non-post weekdays, their correspondence may be obtained by the residents on calling at the post office on the Island.

Has the Minister considered as an alternative to the dismissal of 700 men the withdrawal or the reduction of the cost of living bonus on salaries of £350 and upwards, which would give him the same saving without curtailing the postal service?
