Vol. 29 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division and Vesting of Estates in Mayo and Galway.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when the settlement, division and vesting of the General Lewin estate, Counties Mayo and Galway, will be completed, and furthermore if the Land Commission will receive new applications for portions of land on this estate.

The re-sale of this estate will involve re-arrangement of a number of holdings and, having regard to the work involved in preparing a scheme, the Land Commission will not be able to put it into operation before the end of the year. Applications for parcels of land may be sent to the Land Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when the vesting of the tenant purchasers in their holdings will be completed on the Sligo Estate, Co. Mayo; and also if he will state what steps are being taken by the Land Commission to deal with the acute congestion that exists on this estate, particularly in the Purranes District, Hollymount, and the Louisburgh District, Westport.

This estate was purchased by the Congested Districts Board. 689 purchase agreements, covering an area of about 20,000 acres, have been signed and the lands vested in the tenants, and steps towards the re-sale of tenants' holdings of an area of 59,457 acres are in hands. Owing to the necessity for the re-arrangement of the remaining holdings, and having regard to the limited area of untenanted land available, the Land Commission are not in a position to complete the re-sale of these holdings as quickly as they would desire.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when the vesting of the tenant purchasers in their holdings on the De Clifford Estate, Co. Mayo, will be completed, and also if he will state what steps are being taken by the Land Commission to deal with the acute congestion that exists on this estate.

It is assumed that the Deputy refers to the estate of Lord de Clifford, situated in the rural district of Claremorris, and if so, it is not possible at present to say when the unsold holdings on it will be vested in the tenants. Owing to the small area of untenanted land acquired it was not possible to relieve the congestion existing on this estate, but steps are being taken to acquire lands in the vicinity for this purpose.
