Vol. 30 No. 3

Private Notice Question. - Threatened Railway Dispute.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the grave situation that has arisen consequent on the threatened dispute between the Great Southern Railways Co. and their employees engaged in the railway shops; and if he will say what steps he has taken or does he propose to take to prevent a possible dislocation of the railways.

As I indicated in reply to a question put to me during the week, I knew that there was a dispute and also that the two parties to it were in conference. It was only very late last night that I learned from one of the parties that they believed that a conference of that type would not carry the matter further. Application was made to me to receive a deputation of the men to-day and I am doing that. I have no information as to what transpired at the other conference.

Mr. O'Connell

Would the Minister say at what time he is receiving the deputation?

I think it is at half-past twelve to-day.

Mr. O'Connell

In view of the gravity of the situation I desire to give notice that it may be necessary to raise the matter on the adjournment motion to see whether the Minister would be in a position before the Dáil adjourns to make a further statement.
