Vol. 31 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Fire—Failure of Hydrant.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if his attention has been drawn to the fire which broke out in the I.O.C. garage, Dominick Street, Dublin, on Friday, 28th June, and in particular to the statements appearing in the Press with reference to the inadequate water supply in the district, and the failure of one of the hydrants to function as a result; and, if so, if he will take the matter up with the Dublin City Commissioners with a view to ensuring that the water supply is made adequate for such emergencies in the future.

I understand from the City Commissioners that an abundant supply of water was available from hydrants in Mount-joy Street and Constitution Hill on the occasion referred to. It appears, however, that a hydrant in Dominick Street did not furnish an equal pressure. In the present year £7,500 has been provided in the City Estimates for replacing old mains, and Dominick Street is on the schedule for relaying.
