asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) against how many bookmakers have body warrants been issued arising out of overholding of Betting Duty; (b) the amount of duty due the Revenue Commissioners in each case; and (c) the amount of the fine imposed in each case.

As the answer is long and contains a number of figures, I propose to circulate it in the Official Report. Following is the answer:—
(a) Body warrants were issued against forty-two bookmakers arising out of the overholding of Betting Duty.
(b) In thirty-one cases the amounts of duty due can be definitely stated. These amounts are as follows:—

In five of the remaining cases an estimate has been made of the amounts of duty withheld by the bookmakers concerned. The estimated amounts are:—

In four cases no estimate can be made but there is clear evidence of the existence of fraudulent irregularities for considerable periods. In two cases amounts of £30 8s. 4d. and £4 7s. 2d. can be definitely stated as being due, but there is, in addition, in each case a further undetermined liability.
(c) In each of the first twentythree cases referred to in the first paragraph of (b) the amount of the penalty imposed was £125 as mitigated by the District Justice. In the remaining eight cases referred to in the same paragraph the amounts of the penalties were respectively:—
£500, £500, £500, £500, £250, £250 £250, and £375.
In the five cases where the amounts of duty withheld have been estimated, the respective penalties were £750, £750, £500, £1,000 and £1,500. In the four cases where no estimates can be made the penalties amounted to sums of £13,000, £2,520, £500 and £250. In the last two cases the penalties were £645 and £625.
The figures given are in respect of all warrants issued, whether executed or not. In cases where the warrants have been executed and the bookmakers imprisoned the amounts of duty shown were the amounts due at the date of the committal of the parties to prison. In the cases of unexecuted warrants the amounts of duty at present due are quoted.
