Vol. 32 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Balbriggan Hosiery Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that many skilled hosiery workers who had been employed in the Balbriggan Hosiery Factory that was destroyed by the British Forces have been forced to emigrate, and that many others who have been unemployed for a very long period also contemplate leaving the country; and further, if he will state whether any special efforts are being made to have the destroyed factory rebuilt, or if it is his intention to do anything to try and retain these skilled workers in the country.

I understand that the remaining hosiery factory in Balbriggan is now giving increased employment and has absorbed some of the workers unemployed by the destruction of the factory referred to.

I am prepared to consider any sound proposition for the reopening of this factory and to assist such a proposition by any means within my powers. More than one proposal has already been laid before me in this connection, but I have not been satisfied that any of them were commercially feasible.
