Vol. 36 No. 7

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of School Buildings.

asked the Minister for Education to state (a) the number of school buildings in the Saorstát on the 31st March last which have been reported on by Officers of his Department as being wholly unsuited for use as school buildings; (b) the number of school buildings which, on the same date, required some alteration or improvement in order that they may be suited for use as school buildings; (c) the number of school buildings in which, on the same date, additional accommodation was required; (d) the number of school buildings in which no sanitary accommodation is provided; and (c) the number of school buildings in which bad or unsuitable sanitary accommodation is provided.

From the latest statistical information available in my Department there are approximately 250 cases in which new school buildings, and 300, in which enlargements or improvements of existing buildings, are required. It is estimated that there are also about 800 cases, in which alterations or improvements of a minor character are needed.

The provision of sanitary accommodation is required at 111 schools.

Reports on the defects in the sanitary accommodation of schools are being received by the Office, but we are not yet in a position to tabulate them.
