Vol. 37 No. 8

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expediting of Relief Works.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether, as it is now possible for labourers to work from 8 o'clock a.m. to 6 o'clock p.m. on a working day, he will speed up the relief works about to be undertaken by his Department, so as to relieve unemployment during the present month.

I do not quite understand what the Deputy means. As the workers on relief works are paid by the day, not by the hour, his suggestion of a longer working day would scarcely have the effect that I presume he intends.

Generally speaking, I can assure the Deputy that expenditure on relief works is being made by the Land Commission as promptly as is possible, consistent with the selection of useful works and the widespread relief of the most necessitous cases.
