I move for leave to introduce an Act to postpone the triennial elections to certain local authorities which are due to be held next after the passing of this Act and to postpone the elections to certain other local authorities which are required by law to be held within a period expiring within three years after the passing of this Act and to postpone meetings of local authorities required by law to be held during the period commencing on the 23rd day of June, 1932, and ending on the 1st day of July, 1932, and to make provisions consequential on or incidental to such postponements.
Perhaps I should explain that the intention of this Bill is to postpone elections for county councils, urban district councils and town commissioners due to take place this year. It will not apply to county boroughs. The reason for postponement is that the Government will put before the House an outline of changes which it proposes to make in respect of local government as far as it affects county councils particularly. These proposals will be of such a nature that the inconvenience and expense of having elections this year would not be worth it.
