Vol. 48 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Work in Wexford Foundries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if anything can be done by Departmental action to stimulate work in the Wexford foundries in view of the fact that May and June have always been the busiest months in the agricultural implement manufacturing industry, and if he is aware that owing to shortage of orders one of the three foundries in Wexford, the Selsker Ironworks, is closed down altogether and the other two, the Mill Road Ironworks and the Star Engineering Works, are both employing less hands than at this time last year.

Every effort is being made to create employment in the agricultural implement industry, and under the Department of Agriculture scheme of loans, home manufactured implements must be purchased if available. This provision should stimulate work in the Wexford foundries.

I have not received information that the position is as stated in the final part of the question.

Is the Minister aware that these foundries do not give traders the same facilities as they heretofore gave them, or as foreign firms give them now, in the matter of not charging for the stuff until it is sold, and taking it back if it is not sold?

I am not aware of it.

It is a fact.

I hope the Deputy does not mean me to take everything he states as a fact?

There are a lot of facts which the Minister does not know, and it is no harm to remind him of them.
