Vol. 48 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Registration in Limerick.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the numbers registered as unemployed at the Employment Exchange at Limerick in January, 1932, and the numbers for January, 1933.

I have, on a number of occasions, explained to Deputies that administrative changes affecting the Employment Exchanges, made during 1932, have so altered the position with regard to the registration of unemployed work-people, that there is no basis for comparison between the number registered in any area on a date prior to the making of those changes, and subsequent dates. Publication of figures such as the Deputy requests in his question has caused misunderstanding of the position amongst the public with damage to economic interests of the country or particular areas. The number registered as unemployed at the Limerick Exchange during the week ended January 2nd, 1933, was 3,433.
