Vol. 48 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounty on Live Fowl.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will arrange for the payment of a bounty on the export of live fowl to Great Britain as owing to the difficulty of sending dead fowl to the British markets during the summer months when they quickly become unfit for consumption, it would be advantageous to encourage the shipment of live instead of dead fowl.

As at present advised, I am not disposed to recommend the payment of a bounty on poultry exported alive, as I am satisfied that, apart from various disadvantages, including transit difficulties, connected with the export of live poultry, the dead poultry export industry is better suited to the general agricultural economy of this country. I may add that I have received no complaints that the latter industry suffers from the difficulty referred to in the question.

Is the Minister aware that there are several complaints in regard to dead fowl? I know lots of people engaged in the business in a small way and for every dozen pair of fowl they send, eight or ten birds are rejected?

Dr. Ryan

I have heard of no complaint.

You will later on.

Dr. Ryan

When the Deputy has time to work it up, I suppose.
